Control of the intake manifold runners aids engines by tuning their performance for low-end torque and high end power. Control of Runner system enables better response of the engine to operating conditions by modifying length and shape of the intake manifold runners. It has been demonstrated that to improve torque as well as combustion efficiency, lower engine speeds require longer runners that increase air velocity and increase swirling of the air fuel mixture. In contrast, at high engine speeds, shorter runners are used to lower flow resistance, increasing the volume of air that enters the cylinders to improve output power.
